Description
  • The aim of this project was to treat mice with melanoma tumors. In order to fulfill these requirements, a planar microwave applicator was developed. The applicator was composed by a cavity with a circular radiating slot. The dimensions of the applicator were chosen to have resonance frequency at 2450 MHz. To reduced the risk of skin overheating the applicator was designed with an integrated water bolus. The applicator optimization and preliminary evaluation was made using computer simulators. To perform the in-vivo experiments a microwave system was developed too. The preliminary tests were performed on homogeneous flat phantom before to move to the in-vivo model. The attention was especially paid on the enhancement of the temperature in the depth, to evaluate the eventuality of body temperature enhancement during the treatments. Several in-vivo experiments have shown how this applicator was suitable for in-vivo studies with clinical perspectives on human patients.
