Description
  • Chinchillas are true herbivore mammal with complete elodont dentition. Dental disease is in pet chinchillas the most commonly encountered health disorder. Clinical signs of dental disease include anorexia, progressive weight loss, change of feeding habits and feed preferences, deterioration of fur quality and excessive salivation commonly resulting in fur chewing. Apical elongation of all teeth is commonly obvious and in contrast to other commonly kept small herbivorous mammals, apical elongation of the first two cheek teeth could be palpated cranially to the zygomatic arch, close to the as firm bony swellings. Cheek teeth osteoresorptive lesions are commonly seen. Chinchillas have a high incidence of gum erosions, gingivitis and gingival hyperplasia. This correlates with the presence of elongated clinical crowns and spur formation, particularly involving the maxillary cheek teeth. The main cause of partial or total obstruction of the lacrimal duct is bony remodelling around elongating maxillary premolar and first molar tooth apices. Diagnosis is based on clinical examiantion, oral cavity endoscopy and radiography. Treatment is aimed to restore the normal crown height and occlusal plane with the use of straight dental piece and dental burrs.
