Description
| - Heavy metals are classified as priority pollutants monitored in environments. Heavy metals are not biodegradable, having ability to accumulate in organisms. Cadmium is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions in the environment due to its high mobility and severe toxicity to the organisms. Zinc is an essential micronutrient for plants but can be highly toxic when present at excessive concentration. We aimed at investigation of detoxification mechanisms of maize plants (Zea mays L.) treated with the following combinations of zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions 0 mM Zn2+ + 0 mM Cd2+; 100 mM Zn2+ + 0 mM Cd2+; 0 mM Zn2+ + 100 mM Cd2+; 10 mM Zn2+ + 100 mM Cd2+; 50 mM Zn2+ + 100 mM Cd2+; 75 mM Zn2+ + 100 mM Cd2+ and 100 mM Zn2+ + 100 mM Cd2+ for 10 days. Based on fresh weight of plants we observed the all treated experimental groups had decrease production of both aboveground biomass and root parts compared with control. In addition to growth parameters, we electrochemically determined the metal content in plants.
