  • Electrochemical one-electron reduction of the extended viologen dication 12+ proceeds reversibly at -0.64 V (vs. Ag|AgCl electrode) to yield the red cation radical 1+. , which readily produces a dark blue dimer hindering the observation of a second one-electron reduction of 1+.. Conventional electrochemical methods suggest that the only second reduction step occurs at -1.4 V. Fast cyclic voltammetry at scan rates up to kV/s and voltammetry at micromolar concentrations eliminate the coupled bimolecular chemical reactions and permit the determination of the reduction potential of the cation radical 1+.

  • Elektrochemická jednoelektronová redukce prodlouženého viologenového dikationtu 12+ probíhá reversibilně u potenciálu -0.64 V (oproti Ag|AgCl electrodě) za vzniku červeného kation radikálu 1+. , který tvoří tmavě modrý dimer, neumožňující pozorování následné jednoelektronové redukce. Konvenční elektrochemické metody ukázaly druhou redukci při -1.4 V. Rychlá cyklická voltametrie při rychlostech skenu až do kV/s a voltametrie měřena při mikromolárních koncentracích 12+ umožnila eliminovat bimolekulární chemické reakce, co vedlo k určení redukčního potenciálu 1+. kation radikálu.
