Description
| - This paper reported on the anomalous diffusion of C1-C6 alcohol vapours in different high fractional free volume amorphous glassy perfluoropolymer Teflon AF2400. In this material during time-lag measurements the transient in the pressure increase curve of aliphatic alcohols exhibit quite unusually behaviour, different from previously reported diffusion of permanent gases and of the other tested vapours (hydrocarbons, acetone, dichloromethane etc.). Such unusual behaviour can be explained by simultaneous diffusion of dynamic molecular aggregates ? clusters, at least two or three molecules with different diffusion coefficients differing in orders of magnitude from those of single molecules. Probability of cluster formation is higher at C1-C6 alcohol vapour activities a } 0.8, the average cluster size decreases from methanol to pentanol with increasing of the molecular size due to the longer hydrocarbon chain and, consequently, the lower polarity. Weak (butanol, pentanol) and almost zero (hexanol) clustering ability in Teflon AF 2400, predicted by C1-C4 alcohol vapour permeation data based correlation, was confirmed independently by ENSIC model and evaluation of trend of diffusion gravimetric sorption experiments in vapours activity range (0.15 ? 0.95). In addition, we present a novel method of raw sorption kinetic data treatment recorded by gravimetric sorption apparatus equipped with calibrated quartz (McBain's) spiral balance. Mentioned treatment enables to eliminate overlapping spurious oscillations of the spiral balance (caused by initial setting of sample gas/vapour into evacuated measuring chamber) and to successfully reconstruct the real elongation of the spiral caused by gas/vapour sorption into a polymer material and, consequently, to calculate even from highly noised sorption data the accurate values of gas/vapour diffusion coefficients.
