Description
| - In Central Europe, Fagus sylvatica L. (Common or European beech) is a dominant species in deciduous forests on moderately moist and acid soils at altitudes ranging from 100 to 900 m a. s. l. (von Oheimb et al. 2005; Bolte et al. 2007), but is extremely rare on the alpine timberline where conifers, with Picea abies (Norway spruce) the most frequent,as well as Larix decidua (European larch) and Pinus cembra (Swiss or Arolla pine), are generally the dominant trees (Körner 1998; Treml and Banaš 2008; Matyssek et al.2009). The sparse occurrence of F. sylvatica at the timberline in Central Europe (Fanta 1981; Erschbamer and Wallnöfer 2007) is in sharp contrast with its more frequent presence at the timberline in the Carpathian Mts. of Eastern Europe (Jeník 1984), the mountain regions of the Balkans (Čufar et al. 2008) or the Apennines in Italy where the alpine timberline corresponds to a mean annual temperature of 4.5C (Körner and Paulsen 2004; Pezzi et al. 2008).
