Description
  • The presented paper is a sequel to the pilot study called The Differences in Direct and Indirect Ways of Expression in Speaker’s Utterances in British and Czech Political Discourse presented at the Pragmatics conference in Lodz in 2008. Unlike the first pilot study, which was theoretically anchored in Searle’s Indirect speech Acts, this paper attempts to investigate the area of indirectness by means of using Yule’s taxonomy of Gricean Conversational Implicatures (CI): Generalized CI, Scalar CI and Particularized CI. The paper presents a contrastive pragmalinguistic analysis of questions asked by interviewers in British and Czech political interviews and debates. Both British and Czech corpus data were downloaded from the official websites of BBC and CT24. The pilot study aims: (1) to judge the applicability of the Yule’s taxonomy as compared to Searle’s ISAs in a research contrasting two different languages; (2) to reveal the possible different tendencies in using indirectness by British and Czech interviewers as based on the general presumption which considers Czech language to use more direct ways of expression than its British counterpart; (3) to compare the results of the first pilot study with the present findings in order to decide which of these two research methodologies fits the comparison of the two languages better and could be possibly used in the further prospective research.
