Description
  • Mycotoxins comprise a group of chemically diverse compounds originating from secondary metabolism of filamentous fungi, moulds. T-2 and HT-2 toxins are type A trichothecene mycotoxins, which are closely-related epoxy sesquiterpenoids produced primarily by Fusarium poae, F. sporotrichioides, F. langsethiae and other Fusarium spp. T-2 and HT-2 toxins contaminate mainly grains such as oat, barley, wheat and maize as well as in their by-products. HT-2 toxin is a major metabolite of T-2 toxin and they often occur together in infected cereals. The current results suggest that in general HT-2 toxin represents approximately 2/3 of the sum of T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin. T-2 toxin is animal body rapidly metabolised by at least five biotransformation pathways including hydrolysis, hydroxylation, de-epoxidation, glucuronidation and acetylation, resulting in a large number of different metabolites. T-2 toxin and metabolites are rapidly distributed to several tissues and rapidly excreted without any accumulation. Thus any significant human exposure to these toxins from consumption of animal products is unlikely.
