Description	Na základě mnohaletých zkušeností lze každou nemoc či hospitalizaci popsat určitou diagnosou či skupinou nemocí a hospitalizací (skupinou definovanou pomocí diagnóz) i určitým osvědčeným postupem léčení. Podle podmínek a zkušeností jednotlivých nemocnic také každá nemocnice vyléčí jednotlivé nemoci za určitou svou průměrnou ošetřovací dobu (average length of stay-ALOS) a také za své průměrné náklady (COST). Existují tedy průměrné hodnoty času i nákladů léčení za nemocnice (ALOSh, COSTh) i za všechny nemocnice, což představuje jejich současný standard (ALOSs, COSTs). Rozdíl průměrné hodnoty těchto ukazatelů konkrétní nemocnice a za všechny nemocnice (standard) umožňuje vyjádřit dílčí efekty z hlediska ALOS i COST, tedy dvourozměrně (medicínsky a ekonomicky): Efekt (ALOS)h = ALOSh - ALOSs a Efekt (COST)h = COSTh - COSTs Pro popis složité soustavy (např. více nemocnic) jsou k dispozici indexy struktury (Structure Index-SI) a indexy souboru případů (Case-Mix Index-CMI).
