  • Ten selected plant species were studied for use as cover crops in conservation soil tillage technologies in long-term field experiment (maize production type, Fluvisol, clay-loam soil) including the control variant (no cover crop). Cover crops with the highest production of fresh biomass and dry matter were identified and the species with the highest N-fixation as well. The effect of selected cover crops on two spring crops yield and on physical soil properties under no tillage treatment in three-crop rotation was evaluated. On the basis of our results, as much as early sowing term for cover crop growing is recommended for high-level utilization of their favourable effects. With long term use of cover crops in crop rotation the favourable impacts on yield level of main crops and soil structure are expectable.
