Disulfiram irreversibly inhibits acetaldehyde dehydrogenase that oxidizes the ethanol metabolite acetaldehyde into acetic acid. This leads to an accumulation of acetaldehyde that produces a variety of very unpleasant symptoms referred to as the disulfiram-alcohol reaction.
