The goal of the proposed project is to study excited states of carbonyl carotenoids in both organic solvents and bound to various proteins. The project will focus on disclosing details of excited-state properties of carotenoids with a conjugated carbonyl group . These carotenoids exhibit strong dependence of their excited state dynamics on polarity of environment that is assigned to a presence of a charge-transfer state in their excited state manifold. Yet, details about this charge transfer state (e.g. its relation to the lowest excited state S1, its role in energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting) remains undisclosed. The project aims on tight collaboration of two partners who were both involved in disclosing the basic spectroscopic properties of carbonyl carotenoids. Both partners utilize advanced spectroscopic techniques of time-resolved spectroscopy and have extensive experience in the research field of carotenoid excited states.
