Description
  • Extracellular adenosine is a very ancient and important signaling molecule informing individual cells, tissues and even whole organisms about their metabolic and physiological status. In higher organisms, this molecule adopted roles in various physiological processes and it is produced under various stressful stimuli. In previous years, we have developed a genetic model for extracellular adenosine actions using Drosophila melanogaster and confirmed that flies share many adenosine roles with higher organisms. Our recent genetic screen led to some new, substantial understanding of the extracellular adenosine effects. Here we propose to continue in this genetic screen and to characterize new genes involved in adenosine actions as well as to further investigate our hypothesis of extracellular adenosine being a key player in process of wasting (progressive loss of energy store) under certain stressful conditions. This could have an important impact in biomedical research. (en)
