| Description
| - Bacterial pathogens and synantropic mites represent an important human health risk related to food-safety and security. The allergens produced by stored-product mites are introduced into the food chain directly by mite bodies as well as in mite feces. Several recent studies indicated that some of the allergenic proteins are of a microbial origin. We previously observed and identified a wide spectrum of bacteria in the gut of synantropic mite species. There is a likely possibility that these bacteria produce the aforementioned human allergens. In addition, synantropic mites disseminate the gut associated bacteria in their feces leading to stored-food contamination. The proposed project is focused on the investigation of the mite-bacterial association and resulting human health hazards in stored-food commodities.
