Description
| - Female paddlefish (Polyodon spathula, Polyodontidae), like sturgeon, are highly valued for their blackish roe for caviar. Global supplies from wild populations are near collapse and in some cases an international ban has occurred. Biotechnologies combined with a breeding program are needed to provide new avenues for caviar production. The research for this four-year project is divided into two following areas: a) sex-reversal of paddlefish (neomales) by using fadrozole, a non-steroid compound and b) proteomics cryopreserved sperm study. The goals of this project are based on developing neo-males for a breeding program in order to increase the percentage of females when crossing ova with sperm of neomales and study of proteomics for sperm cryopreservation essential for long-term storage of this potentially unique sperm. For the sex-reversal study we will implant juvenile (12 months old) gynogenetic paddlefish with 5- and 10-mg implants of fadrozole. We will evaluate the cytological formation of gonada (en)
